Captain Beefheart (born Don Van Vliet, 1941-2010) was a vocalist, composer, and visual artist who created some of the most challenging and rewarding music in rock history. Trout Mask Replica (1969), produced by his childhood friend Frank Zappa, is one of the most influential albums ever made — its 28 tracks of fractured blues, spoken-word poetry, and polyrhythmic chaos were rehearsed obsessively for months by his Magic Band. His vocal range spanned four and a half octaves, from a low howl to a falsetto shriek. Safe as Milk (1967) was accessible blues-rock; Lick My Decals Off, Baby (1970) and Clear Spot (1972) refined the Trout Mask approach. He retired from music in 1982 to focus on painting, achieving significant success as a visual artist. His influence extends to punk, post-punk, new wave, and experimental rock.
