Sleater-Kinney formed in Olympia, Washington in 1994 from the riot grrrl scene, built around the interlocking guitars of Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein. Their approach was deliberately confrontational — two guitars with no bass, Tucker's vibrato vocal against Brownstein's rhythmic attack, creating a sound that was simultaneously abrasive and melodic. Brownstein plays a Gibson SG Standard, which she has described as a demon guitar — the harder you play, the more it reacts. Tucker gravitates toward Gibson SG Juniors and Les Paul Specials. Dig Me Out and The Woods are considered their defining records. Rolling Stone called them the greatest American punk band in 2001.
