U2 formed in Dublin in 1976, coalescing around vocalist Bono, guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton, and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. The Edge's guitar playing — characterized by heavy use of delay effects, open tunings, and a clean Vox AC30 tone — became one of the most distinctive sounds in rock. The Joshua Tree (1987) is one of the best-selling albums in history, producing Where the Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and With or Without You. U2 spent the 1990s reinventing themselves with the Zoo TV and PopMart tours, among the largest and most elaborate concert productions ever staged. They have sold over 170 million records worldwide and remain one of the highest-grossing live acts in history.
