Whitesnake formed in London in 1978, founded by Deep Purple vocalist David Coverdale following that band's dissolution. Early albums drew heavily on blues-rock in the tradition of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, but the band achieved their commercial peak with the slick, American-market-oriented Whitesnake (1987), which produced the worldwide hits Here I Go Again and Is This Love. The album sold eight million copies in the United States alone. Coverdale assembled an extraordinary guitar lineup over the years including John Sykes, Adrian Vandenberg, Vivian Campbell, Steve Vai, and Reb Beach. He has maintained the Whitesnake name through numerous lineup changes for over four decades.
