Roland RE-201 Space Echo

The Roland RE-201 Space Echo is a tape-based echo and reverb unit introduced in 1974, combining a tape delay system with three playback heads and a spring reverb tank. Its warm, organic repeats — with natural tape saturation and slight pitch variation on the repeats — became one of the defining sounds of roots reggae, dub, and 1970s rock. Bob Marley and the Wailers used the Space Echo extensively in their studio recordings, particularly on the Island Records albums produced by Chris Blackwell. The unit's slapback delay texture is audible throughout Marley's classic period recordings and became a foundational element of the Wailers' sound.
