Canadian rock band formed in Montreal in 2001 by Win Butler and Régine Chassagne. Their debut album Funeral (2004) is one of the most celebrated indie rock records of the decade — an orchestral, emotionally overwhelming record about loss and community. Neon Bible and The Suburbs followed, the latter winning the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2011. The band plays a rotating array of instruments including guitar, violin, piano, hurdy-gurdy, and xylophone, with Win Butler playing a variety of Telecasters and Les Pauls.
