John Petrucci

John Petrucci co-founded Dream Theater in 1985 at Berklee College of Music, and over four decades has established himself as one of the most technically accomplished guitarists in rock history. His primary instrument has been the Ernie Ball Music Man JP series — a signature guitar he developed with the company beginning in 2001, featuring a basswood body with a maple top, a custom DiMarzio LiquiFire neck pickup and Crunch Lab bridge pickup, a Floyd Rose tremolo, and a 24-fret maple or rosewood fingerboard. The JP's design reflects Petrucci's playing demands: fast neck access for the sweep-picked arpeggios and legato runs that define his style, and high-output pickups with enough clarity to articulate complex passages at high gain. His amplifier of choice through Dream Theater's most celebrated period was the Mesa/Boogie Mark IIC+ — the same amp James Hetfield used on Master of Puppets — whose tight, articulate gain structure suited Petrucci's precise picking technique. On Images and Words (1992), recorded at BearTracks Studios with producer David Prater, Petrucci's tone was captured primarily through the Mark IIC+ and a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, layering the IIC+'s tighter crunch with the Rectifier's looser, heavier saturation. By Scenes from a Memory (1999) and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002), Petrucci had expanded to a complex rack system including a Mesa TriAxis preamp, a TC Electronic G-Force processor, and a custom switching system. His later work incorporated Mesa/Boogie JP-2C signature heads — designed to his specifications based on the original IIC+ circuit. Live, Petrucci's pedalboard includes a DigiTech Whammy, an MXR Dyna Comp, and various modulation and delay pedals feeding into the Mesa heads. His influence on progressive metal guitar technique — particularly the integration of jazz harmony, seven-string extended range playing, and metronomically precise alternate picking — has been definitive.
