Kyuss formed in Palm Desert, California in 1987 and invented the desert rock sound playing generator parties in the open desert, powering their equipment off gasoline generators with no PA system. Josh Homme ran his guitar through bass amplifiers to fill the low-frequency void left by the lack of reinforcement. Blues for the Red Sun and Welcome to Sky Valley are the foundational texts of the genre. The band dissolved in 1995 and directly spawned Queens of the Stone Age, Fu Manchu, Mondo Generator, and dozens of others.
