Ocean Colour Scene
Ocean Colour Scene formed in Birmingham in 1989 and became one of Britpop's most commercially successful second-tier acts, with a sound rooted in mod revival and classic British rock rather than the art school cleverness of Blur or Suede. Simon Fowler's vocals and Steve Cradock's guitar work drew explicitly on The Who, The Small Faces, and Paul Weller — who became a patron of the band, taking them on tour and playing on their records. The Riverboat Song from their 1996 breakthrough Moseley Shoals is built on one of the most recognizable riffs of the era. Cradock plays Epiphone Casino and Gibson ES-335 guitars through Vox amplifiers.
