The Who
The Who formed in London in 1964 and combined pop songwriting with a ferocity and volume that was genuinely new. Pete Townshend's windmill guitar, Keith Moon's explosive drumming, and John Entwistle's melodic bass playing made them the most physically intense live band of their era. Tommy and Quadrophenia are two of rock's foundational concept albums. Their performance at the 1969 Rock and Roll Circus remains one of the greatest live recordings ever captured.
