Elastica formed in London in 1992 around Justine Frischmann, who had briefly been in Suede before departing with drummer Justin Welch. Their self-titled 1995 debut is one of the tightest, most economical records of the era — eleven songs in under thirty minutes, built on post-punk guitar riffs that famously sounded so much like Wire that Wire successfully sued for songwriting credits. Frischmann played a Fender Telecaster through a Marshall, her rhythm playing angular and precise in the way the Britpop mainstream rarely was. Their debut went to number one in the UK and sold 250,000 copies in the US, making them the best-selling Britpop debut in America.
