Sleeper

Sleeper formed in London in 1992 around Louise Wener, who became one of the era's most quotable frontwomen — sharp, funny, and politically direct in a scene dominated by male laddishness. Inbetweener from their debut Smart was a top twenty UK hit built on interlocking guitar lines that showed the influence of Elastica and early post-punk. Wener played Fender Telecaster through Marshall amplification. Their 1995 album The It Girl produced four UK top twenty singles and coincided with the peak of the Britpop bubble. They split in 1998 as the movement collapsed around them and Wener became a novelist.
