Squeeze

Squeeze formed in Deptford, London in 1974, built around the songwriting partnership of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook — frequently compared to Lennon and McCartney for their melodic invention and lyrical wit. Their run of singles in the late 1970s and early 1980s — Cool for Cats, Up the Junction, Tempted, Pulling Mussels (from the Shell), Labelled with Love, Black Coffee in Bed — is one of the finest in British pop. Difford's lyrics are short stories set in working-class England; Tilbrook's melodies are impossibly catchy. Argybargy (1980) and East Side Story (1981, produced by Elvis Costello) are their masterpieces. Jools Holland played keyboards in the early lineup before leaving to become Britain's most famous music television presenter. The band has reunited multiple times and continues to tour.
