American jazz-rock band formed in New York in 1972 by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, who pursued studio perfection with an obsessiveness that redefined what a rock record could sound like. Their albums Aja and Gaucho are benchmarks of studio craft — recorded using the finest session musicians in Los Angeles, each track refined through dozens of takes until every element was exactly right. Fagen plays Yamaha electric piano and synthesizers. The band is known for using virtually every top session guitarist in LA, including Larry Carlton, Jay Graydon, and Steve Khan.
