The Allman Brothers Band

The Allman Brothers Band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969, built around the interplay between Duane Allman's slide guitar and Dickey Betts' melodic lead work — the greatest dual-guitar partnership in rock. At Fillmore East (1971) is widely considered the finest live album in rock history, its extended jams on Whipping Post and In Memory of Elizabeth Reed demonstrating an improvisational mastery that drew equally from blues, jazz, and rock. Duane Allman's death in a motorcycle accident in 1971, followed by bassist Berry Oakley's death a year later, nearly destroyed the band, but they regrouped and produced Ramblin' Man and Jessica. They pioneered Southern rock and the jam band tradition, influencing the Grateful Dead, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Widespread Panic.
