Lynyrd Skynyrd formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964 and built the definitive Southern rock sound around a three-guitar attack, boogie rhythms, and a working-class defiance that found its fullest expression in Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama. Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd and Second Helping are two of Southern rock's foundational albums. The band was decimated by a 1977 plane crash that killed vocalist Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines.
